Kalihi, HI (Wednesday, December 21, 2016) Lanakila Meals on Wheels hosted its first annual Kupuna Wellness Christmas, and brought together seniors from five Kupuna Wellness Centers in Ewa, Kakaako, Kahuluu, Wahiawa and Waianae. In total, 170 Seniors gathered at the Kalihi Union Church gym. Some groups came via city bus while others were treated to shuttled rides donated by Roberts Hawaii and Polynesian Adventure Tours.
Once housekeeping announcements were made, the holiday festivities began! Kupuna could choose from word search worksheets, ornament making, hand massages, takings pictures with Santa, and a contest that asked for the closest guess on how many cookies were in a jar. Once our attendees had tried their hands at a bit of everything, three volunteer singers, Eric Keawe, Jared McCann and Mahealani Wong led an hour’s worth of Christmas carols and hula. The singing and dance numbers got everyone hungry, so plates of mini pork lau lau, chicken long rice, kalua turkey and cabbage, haupia, and sweet potato slices were quickly served. As an added bonus, every single senior who came out also received a Christmas care package full of goodies to take home.
By the time lunch was eaten and gifts were opened, it was already time to head home. Hugs, kisses and wishes for “happy holidays” were exchanged. And as the last of the buses left the parking lot of Kalihi Union Church, we could still hear the faint echo of Mele Kalikimaka ringing throughout the gymnasium walls.
