Meals On Wheels
As Oahu’s oldest, largest and only island-wide meal service for kupuna, we help homebound individuals maintain their independence and live with dignity in the comfort of their own home. Our caring volunteers deliver nutritious meals and true friendship that kupuna say improves their health, makes them feel safe and secure, and allows them to remain in a place they love.
Yet, 1 in 6 kupuna in Hawaii still go hungry each day. The average Meals on Wheels recipient is female, 85 years old and subsists on income of less than $1,000 a month. Studies have shown that when seniors start using Meals on Wheels, their quality of life goes up, and things like hospitalization rates and emergency room visits decrease by up to 30%.
Home-delivered meals are also available for purchase
For kupuna who wish to receive meals temporarily during a recovery period or over the long-term, we provide meal delivery service at a cost of $8.50 per complete meal. Each meal consists of an entrée, starch, vegetable, fruit, brown bread, fortified margarine spread and low-fat milk. Our meals are developed by a registered dietician and chef to ensure our complete meals meet or exceed USDA nutrition guidelines.
Meals are purchased in sets of 5 frozen meals per week. This frees the recipient from the burden of having to wait at home every day to receive meals and allows them to choose when they want to heat up a meal to eat.
…For me, our Saturday mornings are very special…not only do we get to give back to our elderly community, we get to share our aloha with them and in turn, we get lots of aloha back. But the best part for us is that we get to spend real quality time together on our delivery route, talking about anything under the sun, while providing a service to the kupuna and putting smiles on their faces….Randi & son, Jett, Lanakila Meals on Wheels volunteers
….We have so many doctors appointments, having the meals ready to go in the microwave is great. It helps us so much because we have a lot of medical costs and we appreciate having them. I do not cook very often because I cannot stand for very long. Thank you Lanakila Meals on Wheels for allowing us to have these meals, we are very grateful…..Grace, Lanakila Meals on Wheels recipient
